Upcoming Smartphones in 2018-19
With the pace of smartphone evolution moving so fast, there's always something waiting in the wings. No sooner have you spied the latest handset, that there's anticipation for the next big thing.
Here we look at those phones that haven't yet launched, the upcoming phones for 2018 and 2019. We'll be updating this list on a regular basis, with those device rumours we think are credible and exciting.
The upcoming generation of phones
Before we dive into the detail, here are some of the anticipated upcoming handsets for 2018 and 2019:
- Apple iPhone XR
- Huawei Mate 20 Pro
- Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL
- LG V40
- OnePlus 6T
- Nokia 9
- Samsung Galaxy S10
Apple iPhone XR
The Apple iPhone XR is Apple's step-down phone from the new iPhone XS models. It was announced alongside those flagship devices, but isn't yet available to buy, which is why we've kept it on this list.
The iPhone XR offers the same core power as the iPhone XS with the A12 Bionic chip, but moves to an aluminium body. The display is LCD rather than OLED, but it's still fills the front of the phone. The iPhone XR will give you much the same experience as the iPhone XS, but it's more affordable. It will be available in October 2018.
Huawei Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro
The Mate series is typically the larger of Huawei's flagship smartphone ranges and this year's Mate 20 will feature the new Kirin 980 platform and make its debut on 16 October at an event in London.
The Mate 20 series will continue with the premium design found on the Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro, though it is likely to adopt waterproofing and the notch design of the P20 and P20 Pro.
Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL
Google's go-it-alone phone strategy has thrown up a clutch of phones with very good cameras. The Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL are heralded as some of the best cameras out there, without all the fiddle of complicated apps and multiple lenses. Pure Android software with Pixel exclusives serve this smartphone well - and we know there's another update in the works.
These phones have leaked in their entirety and will embrace the notch, meaning even less bezel and the ability to make this big phone a little more compact. There will be Google hardware event on 9 October, when the full details will be revealed.
LG V40 ThinQ
LG has a two-flagship strategy and there's been a plenty of talk about the LG V40. LG has confirmed the name with an invite to a press event on 3 October in New York, where this phone will be revealed.
You can expect a slim design finished in glass, a triple camera system on the rear and a big display that dominates the front of the phone. There have been plenty of leaks and it sounds like a great device.
OnePlus 6T
OnePlus has started talking about the 6T, revealing a few details piece-by-piece, while a few leaks have confirmed some other details. It looks like the OnePlus 6T is going to be getting an in-display fingerprint reader and that it won't have a 3.5mm headphone socket.
The display is set to bust bezels, with a waterdrop notch design, rather than an unsightly slug like lots of other phones.
Nokia 9
There's been a lot of talk about a device called Nokia 9 - at one time the Nokia 8 Sirocco was talked about as the Nokia 9 in rumours. However, with HMD Global setting 4 October as a date for a new device launch, there's every chance this flagship phone might appear (or it could be the Nokia 7.1 Plus).
The Nokia 9 is said to have five cameras on the back and a notched display on the front, along it the latest Qualcomm hardware at its core.
Samsung Galaxy S10 and S10+
Samsung's changes in 2018 haven't been huge, but there's something big coming in 2019 - the Samsung Galaxy S10 and S10+. Rumoured to be launching at Mobile World Congress in February/March 2018.
There's been a lot of talk about in-display fingerprint scanners, while the latest set of leaks suggest that Samsung might be moving to five cameras - that's three on the back and two on the front. There's also talk that the Samsung Galaxy S10 will be one of a new generation of 5G capable handsets - or there will be a 5G variant at least.
We're sure there will be a lot of leaks to come on the Samsung Galaxy S10 - but things are already gathering pace.
